The Role of a Human Manager
The role of a human manager in OOTP is a little bit different than in real life. In real life, teams typically have a general manager, who is responsible for front-office decisions like player signings and roster moves, and a manager, who is responsible for the day-to-day management of the team, such as setting lineups, managing games, and so on. By default, the responsibilities of an OOTP manager include both of these sets of responsibilities. In effect, they are general managers and managers rolled into one. In addition, if you're the human manager of a team with affiliated minor leagues, you're the manager of those teams too!

Human managers also have some ability to edit information for their teams and players. They can edit team logos and colors, change player positions and uniform numbers, adjust fictional player pictures, and so on. Managers in solo leagues also have the ability to edit the setup and league configuration of their games. However, they cannot edit player ratings, ballpark information, etc.

In OOTP you can also choose to manage an affiliated team, for example a Single-A team. This is described in detail in Managing in the Minors.

There is an additional role in OOTP called the Commissioner. Acting as the commissioner gives you additional powers.

Differences between Human and AI Managers
There are a few additional differences between human managers and computer managers in OOTP:

  • Human managers do not die or retire. You can play with the same human manager identity for 200 seasons if you wish.
  • Human managers do not have contracts. There is no financial component to human managers.

Administering Human Managers
A game can have numerous human managers, each in charge of a different team. Most solo games have just one human manager, while most online leagues have many. However, only one human manager can be controlling the game at any given time. Think of this like a computer login account. Only one user can be logged in at once. You can control which human manager is "logged in" using the Select Human Manager option in the OOTP menu. Human managers can be administered in the Add/Edit Human Managers page.

Customizing your Role
Some players don't want all of the responsibility that comes with an OOTP human manager by default. Luckily, OOTP has many options that allow you to customize your management role. In particular, the Manager Options page allows you to delegate much of your authority to your staff on a temporary or permanent basis.

This means that if you just want to be a general manager and not worry about the day-to-day management, you can do it. If you just want to be a manager and not worry about general management, you can do that, too!
