Exhibition Games can be set up between any two playable teams in the modern or historical databases. These games are entirely separate from regular league mode, and will not affect any league you are currently playing.
After choosing this mode, you will first be prompted to set up your exhibition game by choosing the home and away teams. The Historical/Modern dropdown switches between the two databases, but you can freely match teams from one against the other. Note that, when selecting historical teams, the franchise's most recent name is shown in all years - for example, if you want the 1974-75 Kansas City Scouts, they will be shown under the New Jersey Devils name in the 1974 historical list.
After the teams are selected, pressing the Play button will move you to the pregame lines screen (or the Start Screen button can be used to exit Exhibition mode.)
The home team's lines and lineup can be controlled by the user.
Clicking Continue on the lines screen moves you to the main pregame screen, where you can click Play Game to play a single game, or Sim Games to rapidly simulate the specified number of games. If you choose to play the game, you will be shown the ingame screen with the same display options you would normally have when viewing a league game.
After the game(s) end, you will be returned to the main selection screen, with the game results listed in the lower part of the screen. You can click on the boxscores to see the results of individual games. After that, you can either play more of the current matchup, set up a new one, or return to the start screen.
