Player Templates

Player Templates are one of the key building blocks in FHM's player model. Among other things, they influence how a newly-generated player's attributes are arranged, how their skills tend to develop, what roles the AI uses the player in, and how the player sees himself.

Invisible during normal play, they are editable in the player's Edit screen. Changing the template can have a significant effect on how a player performs in the game, so use caution when changing them.

The skater templates are divided up by position, physical play tendency, and offensive/defensive tendency. Offense-oriented forwards are subdivided a little further by their preference for shooting or playmaking. Goalie templates have their own divisions, by style and puckhandling ability.

The key thing to remember about the offensive/two-way/defensive choice: the offensive and defensive options imply a weakness in the opposite area; that should be reflected in his individual attributes (and for players that are still developing, a template like that will tend to improve attributes in the favoured area.) Two-way profiles are best used for the players who are not notably weaker in one part of their game than the other.

A rough guideline for non-physical/physical: physical is for guys who average roughly 1.2 or more PIM per game, technical for 0.4 or fewer. There's a lot of gray area at the fringes, but guys with a lot of penalty minutes should never wind up with a technical template, or vice-versa - remember, a physical template isn't appropriate for a guy who hits a lot but takes very few penalties and doesn't fight. If in doubt, it's probably best to use the "neutral" version of the template that doesn't specify physical or non-physical.
