Prospects Tournaments will be held in some leagues prior to the preseason, in order to give the teams an opportunity to evaluate their up-and-coming players. By default, the tournaments are active in the NHL and KHL in modern games, the NHL in 2005 and later in historical games, and the top (first-created) league in a custom game. However, they can be activated via League Edit on July 1 in other leagues.
Except for very small leagues, the league will split its teams up into a number of different tournaments, usually with 5-6 teams per tournament. They will start on July 14 if the league has regular-season games scheduled before September 1; otherwise they will begin on August 14.
If your team is participating in the tournament, you'll have the opportunity to select which players participate. The roster rules are as follows:
- Roster size for all teams is 18 skaters + 2 goalies
- Minimum Age is the same as the league's minimum age, but must be >15
- Maximum Age is 24
- Only players with <11 career games in a league with (reputation >= this league's reputation) are eligible
- Players in a league with the "college" junior type are not eligible
- Players injured (any level of injury), suspended, or on international duty are not eligible
- If league has foreign player limits, the only players eligible for each team are those with 1st/2nd/3rd nationality the same as the team
- If league uses league rights, players must not have league rights set for this league set to "None" (i.e. no using draft-eligible players)
- Players contracted to other teams in the same league are not eligible
- If the league is not the NHL or a custom league's top level, playeers contracted to teams in leagues with a Junior type of "North American Major Junior" are not eligible
You are able to select players not under contract to your team (although this is somewhat counter-productive as they'll take the spot of one of your own prospects, and you'll gain no advantage in signing them by doing this.)
The AI will handle the actual in-game coaching. Also, in multiplayer games, the AI will automatically select the rosters for human-run teams.
Any players participating in the tournament will receive a small bonus to their development, and each team in the tournament will increasing its scouting levels on all of the players in it.
