Active Rosters
The active roster is the main group of players who are eligible to play games for a baseball team. In OOTP, each team, no matter what kind, has an active roster. When you access the Roster page, by default, you are going to be seeing the active roster. The active roster is also visible by default in the top left corner of the Transactions page.

Active Roster Limits
Teams in OOTP are only allowed to have a certain number of players on their active rosters at any given time. By default, the maximum # of players on an active roster is 25. You do not have to have that many players on your active roster, but most teams keep a full active roster at all times. The active roster limit is customizable in the Roster Rules section of the Rules page during game creation, or after game creation by navigating to OOTP Menu | Game Setup | League Setup tab | Rules tab. OOTP allows you to set the active roster limit from anywhere from 15 to 50 players. The size of the active rosters in OOTP can be changed throughout the season.

Affiliated teams, such as minor league teams, can have their own active roster limits. However, affiliated teams can also have no limit on the active roster size (parent leagues must have an active roster limit), and this is the default setting.

Active Roster Rules
Players can be added to and removed from the active roster throughout the season, but certain rules must be obeyed:

  • Players on the active roster of a parent league team must have a major league contract. If you place a player with a minor league contract on the active roster, his contract will immediately become a minimum-salary major league contract. OOTP does not have split contracts. Once a minor league contract is converted into a major league one, it remains that way for the rest of the season!
  • Players on the active roster of a parent league team that has affiliated child teams must be on the team's secondary roster as well.
  • Players selected in the Rule 5 Draft must remain on the active roster for a full year.
Roster Customization
In addition to changing the # of players allowed on an active roster, OOTP also allows you to further customize your rosters, as follows:

  • Age minimums and maximums - For any league, you can set minimums and maximums for the age of players on the active roster. For example, you could set it so that players must be under the age of 30 to be on a certain team's active roster.
  • Foreign player limit - Foreign player limits allow you to specify a maximum # of foreigners allowed on the active roster. For example, if you're running a Japanese league, and would like to restrict teams to no more than 2 foreigners, you could use this setting. "Foreign" is defined as "from a different nation than the league's home nation."
Either of these settings can be changed in the Roster Rules section of the Rules page during game creation, or after game creation by navigating to OOTP Menu | Game Setup | League Setup tab | Rules tab.

Roster Expansion
The active roster expands near the end of the season to allow younger players an opportunity to get a taste of the big leagues. See Expanded Rosters for more information. In OOTP, the active roster also expands during Spring Training.
