Tactics

The Tactics Setup screen allows you to determine how your team will respond to in-game situations (you cannot intervene and select these tactics manually, you must instruct your team on what to do and when to do it.

The Team Tactics settings offer five general tactics that are applied in all situations:

Shot Targeting allows you to tell your team to attempt at a certain spot in the net, in order to take advantage of a perceived weakness in the opposing goalie.

Checking allows you to tell your team to cover opposing players in a man-to-man system, where each player is assigned a "check" to watch, or a zone system, where defensive players are responsible for any opponents in their particular zone on the ice.

Switch Goalies decides how rapidly your goalie will be removed after giving up several goals or a few in quick succession. Very Fast means a quick hook, while Very Slow is the opposite extreme, letting him stay in regardless of how bad it gets.

Pull Goalie (down by 1) specifies the maximum number of seconds remaining in the game before you will pull your goalie for an extra attacker while down by one goal.

Pull Goalie (down by 2) specifies the maximum number of seconds remaining in the game before you will pull your goalie for an extra attacker while down by two goals.

Game Situation Preferences

Four different types of preferences can be set for each of your lines (the ones set in the Line Setup Screen) in five different game situations: when you're up by two (or more) goals, up by one, tied, down by one, or down by two (or more.) The individual preferences are:

  • Mentality: Ranging from very defensive from very offensive, this determines how many chances your team takes while trying to score. Offensive settings will create more shot opportunities at the expense of turning the puck over more.
  • Forechecking: Ranging from very passive from very active, this determines how many forecheckers your team sends into the opposing team's zone when they are attempting to break out of their own end of the ice. Active settings will increase the likelihood of them turning the puck over to you, at the expense of creating better scoring chances for them.
  • >
  • Shoot/Pass: Ranging from shoot-heavy ("++") to pass-heavy, this determines how many passes your team will make when trying to create a scoring chance. Shoot-heavy teams will shoot very quickly, resulting in lower-quality shots; pass-heavy teams will try to improve their scoring chances, generating fewer but better shots.
  • Aggressiveness: Ranging from very relaxed to very aggressive, this determines how physically aggressive your team acts. Aggressive teams will throw more bodychecks and may have a better chance of intimidating their opponent, but will also take more penalties.
