OFFENSIVE EVEN STRENGTH

Breakout

The attacking team's approach when exiting the defensive zone/entering the neutral zone.

Flexible Reaction

  • Lowers chance of defensive takeaway during breakouts.
  • Best used with defencemen who have good teamwork skills.
  • Strong vs. Torpedo, weak vs. 2-3 Press.

Along Boards

  • Reduces chance of a giveaway during breakouts and makes it more likely that the puck carrier will skate the puck out rather than pass.
  • Best used with wingers and defencemen with good puckhandling skills.
  • Strong vs. 1-1-3, weak vs. 2-1-2.

Through Centre

  • Reduces chance of a giveaway during breakouts and makes it more likely that the puck carrier will skate the puck out rather than pass.
  • Best used with a centre with good skating and puckhandling skills.
  • Strong vs. 1-2-2, weak vs. Torpedo.

Stretch

  • Lowers chance of defender getting a hit during breakouts and makes it more likely that the puck carrier will pass rather than skate the puck out.
  • Best used with wingers with good passing and skating skills.
  • Strong vs. 2-3 Press, weak vs. 1-2-2.

Forwards High

  • Lowers chance of defensive takeaway during breakouts and makes it more likely that the puck carrier will pass rather than skate the puck out.
  • Best used with forwards with good offensive awareness.
  • Strong vs. 2-1-2, weak vs. 1-1-3.

Strict Positional

  • Reduces chance of a giveaway during breakouts.
  • Works best when all players have good skating and teamwork skills.
  • Not particularly strong or weak against any other tactics.

Neutral Zone Offence:

The attacking team's approach when moving across the neutral zone and entering the offensive zone.

Dump In

  • Reduces chance of a giveaway in the neutral zone and significantly increases the chances that the puck will be dumped deep in the offensive zone rather than skating or passing it in.
  • Best used with wingers with good skating skills and strength.
  • Strong vs. 1-2-2 Wide, weak vs. 1-2-2 Retreat.

Funnel

  • Lowers chance of defender getting a hit in the neutral zone.
  • Best used with a centre with good skating and puckhandling skills.
  • Strong vs. 1-3-1 Trap , weak vs. 1-2-2 Lock.

Activated D

  • Lowers chance of defender getting a hit in the neutral zone.
  • Best used with defencemen with good skating and puckhandling skills.
  • Strong vs. 1-2-2 Retreat, weak vs. 1-1-3.

Stay in Your Lanes

  • Reduces chance of a takeaway in the neutral zone and significantly increases the chances that the puck carrier will try to carry the puck himself rather than passing.
  • Best used with forwards with good puckhandling skills who are also strong on their feet.
  • Strong vs. 2-1-2, weak vs. 1-3-1 Trap.

Wide Drive

  • Lowers chance of defensive takeaway in the neutral zone, and makes it more likely the puck will be passed, rather than carried or dumped, into the offensive zone.
  • Best used with wingers with good skating and puckhandling skills.
  • Strong vs. 1-2-2 Lock, weak vs. 1-2-2 Wide.

Balanced Attack

  • Reduces chance of a giveaway in the neutral zone.
  • Works best when all players have good skating and passing skills.
  • Strong vs. 1-1-3, weak vs. 2-1-2.

Attacking Zone Offence:

Cycle

  • Reduces chance of a defensive takeaway, makes it more likely the team will pass rather than shoot, and increases the chance of the team getting in good position to take a shot.
  • Best used with forwards who have good offensive awareness and passing skills.
  • Strong vs. 2-3, weak vs. Man on Man.

Slot Overload

  • Makes it more likely the team will take a shot rather than passing, and increases the chance of the team getting a screened shot, or tipping a shot.
  • Best used with forwards, particularly the centre, with good screening and strength.
  • Strong vs. Half-Ice Overload, weak vs. Sagging Zone.

Behind the Net

  • Reduces chance of an offensive giveaway, and increases the chance of the team getting in good position to take a shot.
  • Best used with a centre with good playmaking skills.
  • Strong vs. Man on Man, weak vs. Wingers Down Low.

Stretch the Zone

  • Makes it more likely the team will pass rather than shoot, and increases the chance of the team getting a man open to take a shot.
  • Best used with wingers with good offensive awareness.
  • Strong vs. Collapse to the Net, weak vs. Strict Zonal.

Triangle

  • Makes it slightly more likely the team will pass rather than shoot, and increases the chance of the defencemen finding an open teammate.
  • Best used with defencemen and/or centre with good offensive awareness and passing skills.
  • Strong vs. Wingers Down Low, Weak vs. 2-3.

Crash the Net

  • Makes it more likely the team will take a shot rather than passing, and increases the chance of the team getting a shot from close to the net.
  • Best used with forwards who are strong on their skates and not afraid go into high-traffic areas.
  • Strong vs. Strict Zonal, weak vs. Collapse to the Net.

Lane Positioning

  • Makes it more likely the team will take a shot rather than passing, and increases the chance of the team getting in good position to take a shot.
  • Works best when all players have good skating and puckhandling skills.
  • Not particularly strong or weak against any other tactics.

1-2-1-1

  • Increases the chance of the team getting in good position to take a shot.
  • Works best when all players have good playmaking and puckhandling skills.
  • Not particularly strong or weak against any other tactics.

2-3

  • Increases the chance of the team getting a forward in good position to take a shot.
  • Works best with forwards with good skating and offensive awareness.
  • Strong vs. Sagging Zone, weak vs. Half-Ice Overload.

DEFENSIVE EVEN STRENGTH

Forechecking:

The defending team's method of disrupting the opposing team's breakout.

1-2-2

  • Increases chance of an offensive giveaway along the boards during the breakout.
  • Best used with forwards with good skating and checking skills.
  • Strong vs. Stretch, weak vs. Through Centre.

1-1-3

  • Increases chance of an offensive giveaway by the forwards during the breakout.
  • Best used with a centre with strong checking skills.
  • Strong vs. Forwards High, weak vs. Along Boards.

2-1-2

  • Increases chance of getting a takeaway during the early stages of the breakout.
  • Best used with forwards, particularly the wingers, with strong checking skills and good defensive positioning.
  • Strong vs. Along Boards, weak vs. Forwards High.

2-3 Press

  • Increases chance of getting a hit during the breakout.
  • Best used with wingers with good checking and skating skills.
  • Strong vs. Flexible Reaction, weak vs. Stretch.

Torpedo

  • Increases chance of getting a takeaway the middle of the ice during the breakout.
  • Best used with forwards, particularly centres, with good skatting and stickchecking skills.
  • Strong vs. Through Centre, weak vs. Flexible Reaction.

Neutral Zone Coverage

The defending team's positioning and tactics in centre ice, once the offence has managed to break out successfully.

1-2-2 Wide

  • Increases chance of getting a hit along the boards at centre ice.
  • Best used with wingers with good speed and stickchecking skills.
  • Strong vs. Wide Drive, weak vs. Dump In.

1-2-2 Lock

  • Increases chance of getting a takeaway the middle of the ice during the breakout.
  • Best used with a LW with good positioning and checking skills.
  • Strong vs. Funnel, weak vs. Wide Drive.

1-2-2 Retreat

  • Increases chance of an offensive giveaway late in the breakout.
  • Best used with defencemen with good positioning skills and speed.
  • Strong vs. Dump In, weak vs. Activated D.

1-3-1 Trap

  • Increases chance of getting a takeaway during the breakout.
  • Best used with a centre with good checking abilities.
  • Not particularly strong against any tactics, weak vs. Funnel.

1-3-1 Boucher

  • Significantly increases chance of an offensive giveaway while decreasing the chances of a takeaway or hit.
  • Best used with forwards with good positioning skills.
  • Not particularly strong or weak against any other tactics.

2-1-2

  • Increases chance of getting a takeaway early in the breakout.
  • Works best when all players have good positioning and checking skills.
  • Strong vs. Balanced Attack, not particularly weak against any tactics.

1-1-3

  • Increases chance of getting a hit late in the breakout.
  • Works best with a centre with good positioning and checking skills.
  • Strong vs. Activated D, weak vs. Balanced Attack.

Defensive Zone Coverage

The defending team's coverage and tactics once the offensive team has established itself in its offensive zone.

2-3

  • Reduces chance of the offensive team getting into position to shoot from the middle of the ice.
  • Works best with forwards, particularly the centre, with good positioning and checking skills.
  • Strong vs. Triangle, weak vs. Cycle.

Collapse to the Net

  • Reduces chance of the offensive team getting into position to shoot from close to the net.
  • Works best with defencemen and wingers with good checking and positioning skills.
  • Strong vs. Crash the Net, weak vs. Stretch the Zone.

Half-Ice Overload

  • Reduces chance of the offensive team getting into position to shoot from outside the slot.
  • Works best with a centre with good defensive awareness.
  • Strong vs. 2-3, weak vs. Slot Overload.

Man on Man

  • Assigns strict man-to-man matchups in the defensive zone (LD to RW, RD to LW, C to C , LW to RD and RW to LD).
  • Works best when all players have good physical skills.
  • Strong vs. Cycle, weak vs. Behind the Net.

Wingers Down Low

  • Reduces chance of the offensive team getting into position to shoot from the wings.
  • Works best with wingers with good positioning and checking skills.
  • Strong vs. Behind the Net, weak vs. Triangle.

Strict Zonal

  • Assigns strict zonal matchups in the defensive zone.
  • Works best when all players have good positioning skills.
  • Strong vs. Stretch the Zone, weak vs. Crash the Net.

Sagging Zone

  • Reduces chance of the offensive team getting into position to shoot from close to the net.
  • Works best when all players have good positioning and defensive awareness.
  • Strong vs. Slot Overload, weak vs. 2-3.

POWER PLAY

Breakout:

The power play team's approach when exiting the defensive zone, passing through the neutral zone, and entering the offensive zone.

Drop Pass

  • Lowers chance of defensive takeaway during breakouts.

Swing
